3 Easy Tips for Going Green

by Sommer on June 23, 2010

Today we’re presenting a guest blog from Sommer Poquette, one of the partners of 3 Green Angels and founder of the blog Green and Clean Mom.

When I first started “going green” it seemed overwhelming. I had so many questions. Where do I start? What do I use? What do I do that isn’t wrong? Am I doing something wrong?

I felt as though the “green police” were going to come to my house without warning! When I watch this television commercial from Audi I laugh, but it’s a nervous laugh because I still wonder who is going to bust me if I forget to bring my reusable bag to the grocery store.

The great thing about starting to “go green” is that you’re probably already doing something and you don’t realize it. Like shutting off your lights to conserve energy and save money. Do you tell the kids to shut the refrigerator door because they’re letting the cold air out? If so, you’re already doing something and that is a start – so give yourself a hand!

Since there are not really police that will arrest you for making a Eco mistake, it is good to know that you’ll make them (mistakes, that is). But since you’re already doing something Eco-friendly without even realizing it, it’s time to turn it up a notch! Here are three things you can do today to start being even more Eco-friendly and they don’t even include using stainless steel sippy cups (which of course I’m in support of):

1.  Check Your Car Tire Pressure. Yes, this makes a difference because when your tires are under-inflated you burn more fuel = more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Check out the details from Drivers Go Green and Planet Green will help you learn how to use a tire gauge, if you don’t know how to!

2.   Close the Blinds. When the sun is beating in and it feels like a thousand degrees outside close your blinds or drapes and use a ceiling fan. When the sun beats through open windows, rooms heat up more quickly, causing you to crank up the air conditioning. That equals more electricity used and more money out of your pocket!  Grist has a great article on fans verses air conditioning for a humorous green read!

3.  Take off Your Shoes! When you walk inside your home with your shoes on, an estimated 85% of outdoor toxins make it inside! For real! Lawn pesticides, lead, dog or cat dodo, and more can come into your home when you don’t take off your shoes and wiping doesn’t 100% do the trick. Check out this Healthy Child article that gives you the low down.

Inflate, close the blinds and take off your shoes and – boom – you’ve done three easy and simple things today to start adding to your list of Eco-friendly living habits!

ELIMINATING TOXIC CHEMICALS, PART 5

by Bret Plate on June 2, 2010

This is the last installment summarizing Debra Lynn Dadd’s very useful ebook, Ten Toxics You Can Toss Today. To read the whole thing, go here:

http://www.toxics.debralynndadd.com/sites/toxics.debralynndadd.com/files/10toxics_0.pdf

Today, Dadd’s last two tips.

TIP #9: WRITE WITHOUT TOLUENE & XYLENE

The Black Death?

I’m sorry, I’m a member of The Writer’s Guild of America. You can’t make me. Whatever this is.

Dadd’s actual target is permanent markers. (Does this mean I can no longer use my beloved Sharpie?) Permanent markers contain those nasty chemicals listed above. According to Dadd, toluene is so toxic it’s on the EPA’s list of 65 “priority pollutants.” I only have onething to say about that: Eeeeeewwwwwwww, gross!

Xylene can cause “dizziness, feelings of euphoria, giddiness, and headaches, as well as confusion, coma, and death.” Okay, I’m not sure what the problem is here. It sounds like the beer at a lot of frat parties I went to in college.

But I’m getting rid of our permanent markers, because I love my sons too much to mess with it..

TIP #10: BRUSH YOUR TEETH WITHOUT FLUORIDE

Yes, because of fluoride we all have better teeth than the English. But the English have, in general, much better senses of humor than we do. The English may have bad teeth, but they’re really, really funny. I know. I met one once.

Here’s Dadd’s point in a capsule. Fluoride can help prevent tooth decay in children. (Adults do not need fluoride at all.) But many (most) municipalities put the darn stuff in the water supply already. It’s also in mouthwashes and tooth paste, leading, believe it or not, to a potential fluoride overdose. While not quite as alarming as a Sponge Bob Square Pants overdose, which as a parent of two young boys I know a thing or two about, it can nonetheless be serious. Symptoms can include mottling of the teeth (see English above) fatigue, headaches, wrinkling of the skin (can you say, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?), even cancer.

So go get some Tom’s baking soda toothpaste and tell your kids to get over the taste.

WEARING WHITE SOCKS LIKE MUDDY WATERS

April 27, 2010

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who, in a nutshell, said his family was going to go green “over my dead body.” When I asked why, he didn’t really have a good answer, other than he thought it was all a bunch of hooey. He sounded, frankly, a little childish, probably [...]

BOB LUTZ KNOWS MORE THAN ME

April 20, 2010

Bob Lutz, the Vice Chairman of General Motors, said in February of this year that “he expects (hybrid cars) will never compromise more than 10 percent of the U.S. auto market…  arguing that while consumers say they want more fuel-efficient vehicles most are unwilling to pay for the costly technology.”  (Green Car Advisor / Edmunds.com).  [...]

!rethink: PLASTIC

March 18, 2010

This picture was taken during the recent U.N. Climate Conference in Copenhagen.  If the two women in the foreground were standing right next to the globe, the globe would be at least three times as tall as the women.  About seventeen feet tall.   As it says on the side, this is the volume of one ton [...]
